Defence is one of the leading training providers in the UK. Complex and increasingly variable workforce needs are supported by a sophisticated training infrastructure. However, the changing character of conflict, the global competition for scarce talent and rapid pace of technological development all places huge pressure on Defence’s ability to balance the demand and supply of the skills it needs.

Supported by Capita, RUSI has published a research paper examining how defence training could be reformed to better support defence transformation and better prepare the armed forces to compete in the future - ‘Goodbye Mr Chips? Modernising Defence Training for the 21st Century’.

This provocative paper highlights six areas that could undermine the ability to succeed: the training culture; system-level governance; training processes; training delivery; the wider learning environment and the capacity and capability of those managing or delivering training.

While pockets of good practice exist within defence, the report finds that there is still much to be done to maximise the chances of success operationally and organisationally.
